A story of Jamila and Sadikin

January 20, 2009

It is not story about Mulan Jamila, an Indonesian top sexy singer you may know. It is not also a story about Ali Sadikin, former well-known Jakarta Governor you ever heard. But it is about most Indonesian citizen who trapped in vicious circle of poverty. Jamila (Lagi-lagi jatuh miskin) are the poor who always falling into poverty just because of simple causes. It may be rising of fuel price, skyrocketing of food price or financial crisis which is there is no direct relation with them. Sadikin –(Sakit sedikit jatuh miskin) are those who just because they are sick –take it they are sick because starving or they have no money to get medicine- but they are, then, falling into poverty. The health system in Indonesia is making people falling into poverty. And, try to make it simple, the poor are not allowed to be sick!

At least, please correct me if I am wrong, more than 150 million from 44 household in Indonesia facing financial problem because of they have no money to healthcare access. 25 million of household or more than 100 million are sensitive to be the poor because they can not pay health services (WHO, 2008).

Jamila and Sadikin must be jealous with Cuba citizen or Chinese or Philippines because they get better and better health service. When they are sick, they have health insurance. The state takes its duty and its responsibility to protect its citizen.

From 280 million of Indonesia citizen, there was just about 70 million covered by Health insurance for the poor (Askeskin). From the rest 210 million, its 20 million of the rich protected by private insurance and 90 million use their pocket. So, how to realize universal coverage of health insurance? Is there any Obama’s plan for Indonesia? Should we let a new Jamila and Sadikin born everyday? How we stop vicious circle of Jamila and Sadikin generation? Or, let them grow because it is Indonesia’s destiny we should face? Is it a curse?
